The Pitch For The 2nd India vs. South Africa Test Match Rated ‘Unsatisfactory’ By ICC

India vs South Africa Pitch Rated Unsatisfactory

The Newlands Cricket Ground in Cape Town witnessed the second Test match between India and South Africa, culminating in a 'unsatisfactory' pitch rating by the ICC. While India secured victory in the two-match series against South Africa, achieving a 1-1 draw, the shortened duration of the match became a major talking point.

With South Africa's unexpected collapse, getting bowled out for a mere 55 runs in their first innings, India faced challenges of their own, losing their final six wickets without any addition to their score, reaching a total of 153. India clinched the match with a 7-wicket victory by the second session of Day 2.

Remarkably, the Newlands Test match concluded in just 642 balls, setting a new record for the shortest Test match with a decisive winner. This surpassed the previous record set in a 1932 Test between Australia and South Africa, where Australia clinched victory in 656 balls.

The swift conclusion led to widespread discussions about the suitability of the pitch. While many voiced concerns over its playability, the ICC offered a different perspective, categorizing the pitch as 'unsatisfactory.'

Chris Broad, the match referee, elaborated on the challenges faced during the game, stating, “The Newlands pitch posed significant difficulties for the batters. The unpredictable and rapid bounce made shot execution challenging, resulting in several players getting hit and wickets tumbling frequently.”

According to ICC regulations, a pitch receiving an 'unsatisfactory' rating may incur a demerit point. Alternatively, if deemed 'unfit,' the pitch could receive three demerit points. These demerit points remain valid for a five-year duration.

Should a venue amass six demerit points within this five-year window, it faces a 12-month suspension from hosting international matches. In light of this, Cricket South Africa retains the right to appeal against the sanction within 14 days, as the overseeing body for the host ground.
